Scores of the Invisible: A weekend workshop exploring improvised movement and contemplative writing with Cody Cook-Parrott

Atland is hosting Scores of the Invisible (August 23 & 24, 2025), a workshop facilitated by Northern Michigan based dancer & writer Cody Cook-Parrott, who will be in residence at Atland this summer.

The 2-day improvised movement and writing workshop is open to locals who live in/near Western Massachusetts as well as out of town folks who need lodging/meals (lodging options are private or shared rooms, camping, & cabins at Atland). The workshop is taking place at Atland and the beautiful Thayer Hill Studio just down the road. Out of town participants can take the Amtrak to the Northampton train station and we can arrange pickups. For those flying, we suggest coming into the Bradley airport in Hartford, CT (let us know if you need an airport pickup).

In this two day workshop we will move at the edges of perception, exploring what shapes our bodies in space. Through compositional improvisation and scores of the invisible we will make small solos, duets, and group ensemble dances together. In an effort to trace the empty space in between us we will collaborate with sound, touch, and words.

Framed by writing exercises for contemplative reflection, our dances will be both laboratory practices and small performances. This is a space of deep listening, inquiry, and curiosity. Our writing practices will both be generative as well as a mode of meditation.

Scores of the Invisible is the name of this class and also the name of a series of scores Cody has been working on to trace the in between of movement and writing, what we keep private and what we perform, and researching what it means to prioritize solo material within group work.

No prior dance or writing experience is necessary, only a willingness to move, notice, and respond.
